Florida
Women's Appointments Project
Explanation and Goals

Nearly 100 years after their right to vote was finally acknowledged, women are 52 percent of our population but only 17 percent of Congress. We're still waiting for our first female president, vice president, or Senate majority leader. It's not just that a healthy democracy needs to be truly representative. Solving the complex problems of 21st century America requires political leadership, experience and wisdom that draws on all of our resources--not just 50 percent of them.

The Women's Appointments Project will identify qualified women for high-level appointed positions within new governors' administrations. The project will also provide governors and their transition teams with the names and resumes of these qualified female candidates for consideration after the election.

The Women's Appointments Project is an initiative of Political Parity, a program of Hunt Alternatives Fund. Parity is chaired by Ambassador Swanee Hunt, who has long championed the vital role of women in positions of leadership world-wide and co-chaired by Lieutenant Governor Kerry Healey. While in office, Lt. Govenor Healey worked closely with the Massachusetts Governor Appointments Project (MassGAP), upon which much of the Women's Appointments Project is modeled. Because of her first-hand experience, Lt. Govenor Healey recognizes the value of increasing the number of women in high-level appointed positions in state government. She suggested expanding the appointments project to 11 states in 2010.

Based on Ambassador Hunt and Lt. Govenor Healey's shared vision, we're starting to create political parity first at the state level, where women hold an average of 31 percent of cabinet and high level positions in administrations nationwide. Women run major universities and Fortune 500 companies and serve as generals. We know there are many qualified women for these positions, so let's introduce them to the governors.
